Getting customers to spend a little more doesn't have to be pushy. Sometimes it just needs good timing.
Average order value is one of the most straightforward levers in ecommerce, but most sites leave it to chance. A recommendation widget buried on the product page. A "you might also like" section customers scroll past. Generic suggestions that have nothing to do with what the customer just bought.
We built something better: a post-basket popup that works hard at exactly the right moment, without getting in the way.
How it works
The moment a customer adds an item to their basket, a popup appears. It does two things at once.
First, it checks whether the customer is close to a tier price threshold for the item they just added. If they've added 2 items and buying 3 would unlock a lower price per unit, it tells them so clearly, right there in the popup. They can update their quantity on the spot, without leaving the page or hunting through the product listing again.
Second, it shows a "Customers Also Bought" panel below. Not guesswork, not rules-based merchandising: recommendations pulled from real transaction data. Products that actual customers bought alongside this one. The kind of suggestion that tends to make sense because it's grounded in real behaviour.
The result is a popup that earns its place. It's useful to the customer, not just to the business, and that's what makes it work.
Why it matters
For catalogues with tier pricing, the popup solves a real frustration. Customers often don't realise they're one or two units away from a meaningfully better price. Surfacing that at the point of adding to basket, where the decision is already in motion, converts more of those missed opportunities into larger orders.
The "also bought" panel does what good cross-selling should: it shows relevant products without feeling like a hard sell. Because the recommendations come from genuine purchase patterns rather than manually curated rules, they stay accurate as the catalogue evolves, no ongoing maintenance required.
Together, these two nudges increase average order value in a way that feels natural to the customer. The key is context. The right prompt, at the right moment, with the right information.
