Fresh produce, smart tech, zero fuss. A local veg box business now running on a platform as fresh as its produce.
5 A Day Box had a clear purpose: get seasonal, locally sourced vegetables to customers' doors every week. But their platform was holding them back. Running on an ageing proprietary system, it was increasingly a security risk and a headache for the team to manage. Time for something built to last.
We moved them onto Hyvä, building a store that handles the real complexity of their business: weekly subscription boxes, flexible delivery slots, and a way for non-technical staff to update box contents without touching a line of code.
What we built
At the heart of the 5 A Day Box business is a simple but time-sensitive operation: customers subscribe to receive a seasonal vegetable box every Tuesday, Thursday or Saturday. What goes in each box changes week to week, and the team needed a way to manage that without relying on a developer every time.
We built a Google Sheets integration that syncs directly to Magento. Staff update the week's box contents in a spreadsheet they already know how to use, and the site updates automatically. Simple for the team, seamless for customers.
With an older customer base in mind, accessibility and ease of use were front and centre throughout the build. Clear typography, generous tap targets, straightforward navigation and plain language throughout, because a veg box subscription should be simple to manage for everyone, regardless of how confident they are online.
We also built a Shop and Swap feature, letting customers personalise their box before it ships. Subscribers can remove up to three items they don't want and replace them with anything else on the site. For non-subscribers, the same flexibility is available at checkout. It's a thoughtful touch that fits well with how a veg box business actually works, some weeks you just don't need another turnip.
The results
The move to Hyvä delivered a significant performance uplift across the board. The Lighthouse scores reflect a site that loads quickly, responds instantly, and stays visually stable, all important qualities when you're asking customers to manage a weekly subscription.
An LCP of 0.6s means the main content is on screen in well under a second. A TBT of just 60ms means the page is interactive almost immediately. And a Speed Index of 1.0s reflects how quickly the page feels complete to the user.
Behind the scenes, the Google Sheets integration means the team spend less time on admin and more time on the business. And the Shop and Swap feature gives customers a level of flexibility that keeps subscriptions healthy.
